Hubcap City!

Taking Mamma Biscuit for her walks in this big, bad city can sometimes feel like a quick visit to the lost and found. Oh the things we’ve discovered along our way—and sometimes, quite literally, right beside Mamma as she relieves herself! It can all seem really odd at times. No joke, we’ve had our moments of pulling a full dime bag of marijuana out of Mamma’s mouth while walking through Fort Tryon Park (hey, they don’t call our neighborhood Washington Haze for nothing) or the time we stumbled upon a stoop full of totally wearable clothes in Brooklyn left for the taking—JACKPOT! We’ve run into thought-provoking vandalism spray-painted right on the sidewalk and we’ve even come across some money blowing past our four-legged beast like tumble weed in a John Wayne movie (don’t get too excited though, we’ve never been lucky enough to find more than a five dollar bill) however, during our walk last week (around the block from the Pug Palace) a speeding car driving swiftly passed us left behind a twirling Cadillac hubcap in the middle of the street—all while Mamma was squatting for a quick squirt of urine! If that wasn’t funny enough, the hubcap didn’t even belong to a true-to-form Cadillac but rather a dusty old Honda Civic with a motor that sounded like a loud and broken-down lawn mower!

Now maybe it had something to do with the particular sneakers I chose to wear during our walk because never in my life have I ever seen a hubcap fly off a car before. Honestly, I feel like Jeremy Scott for Adidas would not have wanted the experience of wearing his kicks any other way! I swear, whenever I slip these marshmallow sneakers on my feet, I feel like I should be break dancing to Grand Master Flash on the moon—but finding a hubcap while walking in them? never crossed my mind—although in retrospect, I could see how it makes sense! So I was totally excited as I waited for the Biscuit Lady to finish her business before running out in the street to retrieve the hubcap so that I can use it as a prop for this photoshoot!

So here is our little ghetto girl giving you all her best South Compton look alongside my Adidas sneakers and that damn Cadillac hubcap. Mamma Biscuit could very well pass as a leader of a thug pug street gang wearing her black with white skull and crossbones handkerchief while resting her lazy chin on that hubcap. All that is missing from these photos is a diamond encrusted pimp cup with “Jesus juice” filled to the brim—but I digress. Now let’s just call Mamma Biscuit Notorious P. U. G. from now on! Off the top of my head, P. U. G. would stand for Pugs United Globally! Now Mamma may not be the violent type as she runs her gang of thug pugs but she will rob you blind with her unbearable cuteness and her weapon of a tongue if you stop to pet her on the street. The last thing you want is to be left sitting on a cinder block with your pockets completely empty of food and money after a meet and greet with her out in the hood! I can’t be held responsible, pet her at your own risk!

OH, and totally off topic but equally important and very New York is the fact that I’m so obsessed with this new song from Azelia Banks entitled Fierce featuring sound clips from the movie, Paris is Burning—my most favorite documentary from 1990 highlighting the Harlem Ball Scene—all before Madonna appropriated the underground scene for her Vogue song and music video! I cannot wait to throw shade on the dance floor to this track—WERK!

Enjoy and Happy Wednesday!

Happy Birthday Mamma Biscuit!

Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday dear Mamma Biscuit
Happy Birthday to you!

YAY

Exactly three years ago on this very day, Tommy and I ventured down to the East Village to pick up our little pug waiting for us at Curly Tail Pug Rescue. Back then, she was marked as eight years old without a confirmed Birthday—and no one had any idea when she could have been born. How sad is that? Can you imagine a life without knowing when you were born, or worse, without any acknowledgment, love or care for it? Now I know Mamma is an animal and she wouldn’t know the difference between a Birthday or any old regular day but she sure knows the difference between life at a puppy mill and life here with us. Also, as you can see through this blog, we treat Mamma Biscuit as if every day were her Birthday! The fact that she’s still kicking around after eight years of indoor crate life and being forced to have litter after litter of puppies proves that animals are really resilient and they can thrive wonderfully with a whole lot of love and care—and quite frankly, no other dog deserves it more than she does.

So we did what any logical dog owner would do three years ago, we made Mamma Biscuit’s arrival date home at the Pug Palace her official Birthday—and today is the big day! So get out a pen and mark this damn day down on your calendar and then go outside and spend some quality time with your pets, children, friends or spouse! Today is not only a day we celebrate Mamma Biscuit but a day to remember and appreciate the important people or animals in our lives and to never take them for granted! Mamma’s freedom and finding a loving home was really her rebirth into the happy life she was meant to have!

I’m sure by now, you all know that our little gremlin beast is the daintiest of dogs and she loves being pampered like the New York City pooch that she is. No other activity gets Mamma Biscuit more excited than a visit to the local doggy grooming spa for a little Birthday beautification. So here is our glowing Biscuit Lady after a visit to Alberto’s Pet Shop and Grooming in our neighborhood where she got a much needed bath, some claw clipping and her anal glands were expressed. I know, I know, too much information but you have to understand, when she gets this total European spa treatment, she comes home smelling like the inside of a brand new car—and her disposition is just as shiny and brand new!

From Albertos, we took Mamma on a walk through the park for some much needed fresh air and exercise. We made our usual stop at our spot in Fort Tryon Park for a Birthday photoshoot before heading home for some Birthday treats. We decked Mamma Biscuit out in a new Laura Ashley inspired summer frock and a set of giant pearls that would make Laura Bush green with envy! Our Little Gremlin is giving her best day in the garden at the White House with the First Lady in these photographs. Now Laura Bush may no longer be our First Lady (thank goodness) but I’d like to think that Michelle Obama would approve of this look too—after all, Mamma is showing off her shoulders and sleeves—if you can call it that!

After entertaining the local children (and ourselves) with Mamma’s Birthday photoshoot in the park, we headed back to the Pug Palace for some Sweet Semosh baked treats! Tommy made Mamma her favorite vegan peanut butter carrot muffins with the letters M and B spelled out in pale yellow icing on top! Mamma was so uncontrollable, running back and forth on our sofa as we were bringing out all of the baked goods for her party. The aroma wafting through our living room must have sent her nose and her little brain into over drive but like the well-mannered little girl that she is, she waited patiently to be fed despite her excitement!

Another interesting fact about Mamma Biscuit is that although she may be seventy-seven years old in dog years, she’s practically reverted back to being a puppy! As of lately, she’s been chasing her tail around as if she were a two year old dog—and every day, she seems to gain more and more of a youthful, energetic spirit. It’s like living with the curious case of Mamma Biscuit at our household as she reverts back to being young again rather than growing old. Now although I love the idea of Mamma being a cougar (which she is from time to time) she can also run with the young crowd and blend seamlessly without any problems! Simply put, our bitch is forever timeless!

Happy Birthday Mamma Biscuit! Today we celebrate you and your life and the joy and happiness you bring to our lives!

By the way, if you haven’t seen this already, head on over to Dogster to read our feature interview by Julia Szabo that was posted on June 8th—you all are going to love it!

Enjoy

Bells Will Be Ringing. . . . Soon!

Oh July, how quickly you have arrived! Where did the time go? It seems like Christmas ended two months ago and here we are again, at the six month benchmark to Christmas 2012—and surprise, surprise, we are totally frantic with excitement in our anticipation! Now I know almost all of you would rather singe your face with a citronella candle or deck the halls (or the outdoor patio) with mosquito repellent than to be subjected to anything holiday related but Mamma Biscuit doesn’t care. As far as she is concerned, the air conditioning is on full blast, the living room temperatures are practically arctic, Christmas records are back out and being spun on the record player and she’s ready to erect our Christmas tree right now! Fortunately, Mamma has two level-headed Daddies that can reign in her holiday excitement all month long—well we hope, I mean I’m trying to reign in my own excitement let alone having to worry about Mamma’s excessive panting for the holidays but we’ll try our best! Most importantly, we have to stay clear of any Johnny Mathis holiday music to keep Mamma in check—the sound of his voice alone could make her demand an entire tray of Christmas sugar cookies on the spot!

Anyway, all month long, Mamma and the Biscuits will be sharing with you all some of our latest vintage holiday finds in honor of Christmas in July on QVC and because we are literally at the half way point until the big day itself! Now unlike the hideous wares showcased on QVC from July 21st to the 24th, Mamma will bring to you some of the best vintage holidays stuff around that will surely make you inspired for the coming months!

About a month ago, we went down to Washington DC to attend a family member’s graduation party and on our way home from that visit, we stopped over at Bahoukas Collectables (our favorite antique shop) in Havre de Grace, Maryland. Now don’t let their Beer MuZeum on the top floor fool you because the ground floor is filled with some of the best antique toys, glassware, furniture, seasonal items, records, hats and jewelry around—you name it, most likely, they’ll have it. In fact, we found Mamma a really great pink hat from this antique shop that we blogged about last year and the owner of the store actually recognized us from when we bought that hat during our recent visit. After we recounted how funny it was that I was going to put Mamma Biscuit in such a hat, he was so excited to show us some vintage Christmas goods that he had just acquired from an old store nearby—dead stock and odds and ends that haven’t seen the light of day in over seventy years. So come along and check out Mamma’s new Christmas goods, just thinking about Christmas will make you feel forty degrees cooler!

First on our tour of vintage ornaments are these awesome, plastic half-balls with angel figures from the 1950’s. Made in Hong Kong, these babies come with a tough exterior shell and a quaint, nostalgic look. The owner only had four left, obviously from a broken set of sorts so I took them all! I have yet to scour Ebay for anymore of these ornaments but I think these would look great mixed in with our pink pig ornaments from Russia, what do you all think?

Second on our tour of vintage ornaments are these amazingly black and white Gothic looking glass ball ornaments that were hand blown in Germany. Dated probably from the 1940’s to the 1950’s, these ornaments were meticulously hand-painted and well crafted.

These glass balls would look fantastic on our white pine tree and again, the owner only had these two ornaments left from a broken set but despite how expensive they were, I would have bought an entire truck-load had there been more!

I’m really getting into black and white ornaments lately and I have this amazing idea for a new display in our hallway come this Christmas! It involves white pine garland, white twinkle lights and a plethora of contrasting black and white glass ornaments of any kind that I would hang from the hallway ceiling surrounding our black, glass chandelier.

We’ll see if I can actually pull all the materials together before November—I’ll keep my fingers and Mamma’s paws crossed in the meantime!

Third on our tour of vintage goods are these flocked paper and felt pipe cleaner figurines from the 1930’s that were made in Japan.

If you all can remember, Mamma has a budding paper village that seems to be getting bigger and bigger every year and I’m always on the look out for these charming little figures to add to this paper scene! I honestly couldn’t believe how inexpensive these two big-nosed guitar and saxophone players were given their age and the overall rarety of these kind of figurines. The fact that these figurines almost pulverized in my hand made me want them even more—and again, I would have taken the entire band with me if they were there for the taking! Sigh, this is what’s so depressing about collecting (seasonal or not) vintage stuff, what you see is what you get and there is no such thing as a reorder.

Last but not least on our vintage holiday tour is this fuzzy and bristly bear with flocked paper detailing. This ornament was super cheap but totally worth it. Why you ask? Because the snout and tongue is just so reminiscent of Mamma Biscuit and her epic tongue! I’m totally making this the Mamma Biscuit ornament for 2012.

So that’s all for now folks but no need to worry, there is more on the way! Mamma Biscuit will be sharing more with you in the coming weeks as we fast approach Christmas in July on QVC. There is nothing we enjoy more than to sit in our air conditioned apartment with Mamma on our lap as we watch every holiday segment QVC has to offer—I’m predicting that fiber optic is going to be HUGE this year—HUGE I tell you!

Enjoy and remember, Christmas is only 170 days away—no pressure though, I’m just saying!

National Anthem!

And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Now play ball—or in Mamma Biscuit’s case, time for her to scour the grounds surrounding the BBQ grill in search for some food! Unlike most dogs, our little gremlin does not fear the sound of a brick of firecrackers going off in the distance or a texas whistler flying over head! No, she’s too busy lookin’ for food to even care or notice. OK, truth be told, she’s sort of deaf and not the sharpest tool in the shed but one thing’s for sure, Mamma Biscuit is super proud to be an American pooch! You see, only in America could a pug find rescue from a puppy mill and the opportunity to live out her golden years in the arms of two doting gay men! More importantly, only in America could a pug build a fabulous wardrobe that can rival anything that you can pull out of Nan Kempner’s closet—and find fame and adoration via the internet while wearing it all!

So Mamma Biscuit wants to wish you all a safe and fun 4th of July holiday. Be proud and thankful for having the simple right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness! Of course, Mamma’s pursuits are pretty simple—food, water, soft-chew treats and the right to nap whenever and wherever she pleases! Ain’t it great to American?

Red, white, blue’s in the skies,
Summer’s in the air and baby,
Heaven’s in your eyes.
I’m your National Anthem.

And finally, our Independence Day festivities would not be complete without including the new Lana Del Rey music video for National Anthem. Personally, I prefer Divine portraying Jackie Kennedy in the John Waters film, Eat Your
Make-Up (I can’t find that clip anywhere online) or Madonna as Marilyn Monroe at the Oscars but I can get on board with Lana and her perfectly sculpted beauty queen hair and modern take as Jackie Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe! So have a look at this long-form Tommy Hilfiger/Ralph Lauren ad set to Instagram—not only will you be glad you did, but somehow, you’ll feel more American!

Lana sure knows how to interpret the new America we live in with such lyrics as:

Money is the reason,
We exist.
Everybody knows it,
It’s a fact. Kiss, kiss.

YES, that’s excatly what you think it is, Lana and the Biscuits and an autograph with a sharpie on Tommy’s wrist! So here’s to America, Lana Del Rey and a six-pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon on ice!

Enjoy

Summertime Schmatta!

There’s more than one way to ease the Summertime sadness here on this boiling, concrete city filled with humidity, smog and way too many tourists—and none of them involve throwing on that Lana Del Rey track on the record player either! Now everyone knows that the true sadness about Lana (whether it’s summer or not) is that she really can’t control her breath while she sings but Mamma doesn’t concern herself with matters that only affect the residents of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. No, our bitch knows that the best way to stay cool and comfortable in these hot Summer months is to throw on an easy breezy schmatta dress like this and call it a day!

Now what’s not to love about a dress that can double up as an apron? It’s comfortable, it’s made from a breathable fabric and honestly, the pattern alone could have easily been on any given dish towel in my grandmother’s kitchen across the Atlantic Ocean in Calabria, Italy! We’re also not too concerned that this pattern may age Mamma Biscuit in any way considering that granny-chic is so on trend this season in this city—and let’s face it, Mamma can wear a sack of russet potatoes on her back and still look fierce!

So off to the park we went for a Summertime stroll in Mamma’s Summertime dress. If you removed her from the urban park background of these photos and replaced it with a crumbling stone house alongside a line of cypress trees overlooking a hillside, they could very well be a canine advertisement for a vacation under the Tuscan sun!

Come to think of it, I might save this dress for late August when my mother decides to make her homemade tomato sauce! I can just see Mamma Biscuit running around the kitchen in this house dress as my mother prepares to boil 600 pounds of tomatoes in a giant pot! The entire look seems fitting for that late summer, labor-intensive, Italian tradition!

Stay cool!
