Throwback Thursday #7

GraveyardMamma1

October has finally arrived and boy do we have a super busy month ahead of us filled with fabulous Autumnal outings and Halloween festivities to share with you all. It’s been about a week since we decorated the apartment with everything Halloween and vintage and I can’t wait to unveil our spooky Pug Palace to you folks out there—you’re gonna love it! In my spare time (and let me tell you, my spare time comes in 4-minute intervals these days) I’ve been toiling away (and going blind in the process) with Mamma’s Halloween costume—and let’s just say, it’s gonna be EPIC! While I’m working on Mamma’s costume, Tommy and our friend Vadim are prepping for the New York City Walk for Farm Animals on October 19th in Central Park. The both of them are fundraising for Farm Sanctuary, a safe haven for rescued and escaped factory farm animals. If you want to live in a more compassionate world for animals, click here, read all about their walk and donate—every little bit helps! In between all of these Halloween preparations and general excitement for anything spooky, Tommy, Mamma and I had some down time over the weekend so we decided to keep our annual tradition alive by watching one of two classic movies that usher in the spirit of Halloween for us: Teen Witch. The other movie we watch is The Worst Witch but we’re saving that for mid October when Halloween mania is in full swing! But back to the cult classic Teen Witch, there really is no other movie out there that encapsulates the zeitgeist of 1989 like this movie. It has everything you want in a late 80s teen flick: high hair, a witch with magical powers, a hunky football player, Zelda Rubinstein (enough said), the most embarrassing rap scene ever in the history of Hip-Hop (no one can top that, pun intended), a movie wardrobe that strangely looks like anything you can currently buy at American Apparel and a sound track so awful it’s beyond brilliant! Of course Mamma Biscuit snored throughout the entire viewing but her nap did not dissuade me from singing along from the top of my lungs to the most popular girl scene—and yes, I know, I’m a total loser so just deal with it! But enough about Mamma’s October plans and back to our Throwback Thursday because in the spirit of the impending holiday, we bring to you this week, Mamma Biscuit in a graveyard!

GraveyardMamma2

Mamma Biscuit has definitely had her share of graveyard experiences. Don’t get me wrong, our Biscuit isn’t necessarily draped across a tombstone dressed like Stevie Nicks on a Friday night (although knowing me, I could make that happen) and she’s not lighting candles and hanging out with the Goth kids and listening to The Cure either! She does however enjoy the serenity and silence that can only be found in a crumbling graveyard. So I thought it would be fun to relive our adventure through one very large graveyard out in Provincetown many years ago.

GraveyardMamma3
GraveyardMamma4

I have no recollection of the exact name of this cemetery (even after doing some light research online) but I can assure you that it is not the main graveyard in town a few blocks away from Commercial Street—we’ve been to that one too. If memory serves me well, this crumbling piece of history sits upon a hill at the beginning of Bradford Street and affords some spectacular views of the Pilgrim Monument! Mamma Biscuit considers Provincetown to be her second home and the locals love every bit of her as much as she loves them, their town and their graveyards!

GraveyardMamma5
GraveyardMamma6

It was so funny to watch our little gremlin weave in and out around the crumbling tombstones with faded epitaphs and hearing the jingle of her collar tags and the crunching sound of her paws on the dead grass below her feet. It was like she was being chased by the Headless Horseman and the only time she would stop running is when she felt the need to pay her respects to the deceased by urinating all over their resting place! Actually, she also stopped dead in her tracks when she heard me rattle out her bag of soft chew peanut butter treats too!

GraveyardMamma7

At any rate, here’s our Throwback Thursday for you, Halloween style . . . because if a pug in a graveyard won’t get you inspired for October 31st, nothing will!

Pin it and Go!

PinIt1

It’s been a San Francisco type of Autumn here in New York City. You know what that’s like, right? Four seasons in one day that has you piling on layers while walking in the shade and peeling them off once you’ve crossed over onto the sunny side of the street. We just came back from our dear friends’ gay wedding out on Fire Island and the days were warm and breezy and the nights were so cold you needed a blanket and a hot cup of tea to survive . . . well, at least I did, the rest were drunk enough to keep warm. Despite all of that, I still managed one last dip in a pool that felt like throwing myself onto a piece of cold glass. Luckily, a hot tub bubbling with bacteria was waiting for me to thaw out in—oh and in case you were wondering, I get my STD results back in a week, keep your fingers crossed! Hot tubs scare the living daylights out of me and I’ll just leave it at that! I guess it could be worse though, we could have an Indian Summer that would require plugging in the air conditioning unit again but who would want to deal with that? I couldn’t imagine running the AC in our Pug Palace after putting up all of Mamma Biscuit’s Halloween decorations—that would just seem so anti-Autumn, don’t you think? So I guess I’ll take the flip-flop temperatures with a dose of lukewarm enthusiasm and keep it moving. Luckily, our little gremlin has such a diverse Fall wardrobe that she can go from a cozy cable knit sweater to an easy breezy jersey dress without skipping a bark. Sometimes a girl needs a light-weight dress for Autumn to run around town in—any old’ pup knows that.

PinIt2

So here’s Mamma Biscuit posing for a few portraits during an errand-run with us around the neighborhood before we headed out to Fire Island last week. Mamma was sporting one of her many light jersey dresses in a stunning blue color. As we shared in our last post, it’s all about embracing color throughout the Autumn season and Mamma is sticking to that fashion philosophy!

PinIt3

This sweet little jersey dress has gorgeous ruffled detailing on the back that tapers to a lovely rosette on one shoulder—and the best part of this look was peppering in an East Village flare with some vintage buttons on her upper bodice. As I was rummaging through my accessory closet (desperately looking for jewelry to bring with me to Fire Island) I came across our old buttons from back in the day—a whole box full to be exact.

PinIt4

These buttons haven’t seen the light of day since 1986 where most likely, they lived on the lapel of an acid wash denim jacket—without irony! I picked my three favorite out of the bunch that perfectly describes the mentality of a New Yorker! It didn’t matter if the backs of these buttons had more rust on them than an old tin can, I just had to have Mamma walk around town wearing them!

PinIt5

OK, so the last thing anyone would think is that Mamma Biscuit is high on stress. It’s more like she’s high on soft-chew peanut butter treats or food in general however, she’s totally mastered a who cares, almost totally indifferent attitude, that’s for sure! Also, Mamma’s general skepticism of anyone who pretends to have some food in their possession to lure a pug hug and kiss from her would fall squarely into the bullshit category so I would say we did good nailing two out of three phrase pins to describe her personality! I know I have an old Desperately Seeking Susan Madonna pin somewhere but unfortunately, I just couldn’t find it.

They’ll be more outfits in need of a vintage pin or two, so sit tight people and enjoy yet another installment of Mamma’s Fall wardrobe!

Happy Friday y’all!

Color Blocking in the City!

ColorBlock1

Do you know what I love most about Fall fashion trends? It’s that all the old rules have been thrown out the window! Actually, that’s what I love about NYC fashion in general—anything and EVERYTHING goes no matter what time of year it may be—except for Uggs, I just can’t get on board with that footwear. I’m almost positive that the word Ugg is short for ugly! There’s nothing worse than a woman (any age) walking around wearing a pair of Victoria Secret sweatpants with the word PINK displayed across her ass tucked into a pair of Uggs! I’m sorry to digress but I just find that look offensive on so many levels. Anyway, how can anyone take the old rule of not wearing white after Labor Day seriously when there’s such a thing as Winter white? In my opinion, it’s not about the actual color but rather the material of the garment that should delineate seasons. Linen is white but a cable knit sweater or a wool coat can be white too, which do you think would work best during Autumn or Winter? I’ve been around enough fashion in my lifetime to know that when Autumn comes rolling around, fashion designers worldwide like to pay homage to warm, natural colors that mimic the foliage outdoors, but lately, designers have dropped the literal color scheme that has been conventionally assigned to each season and instead, have implored us all to wear bright and rich colors all year long—and Mamma Biscuit is fiercely excited about that!

ColorBlock2

Color in our wardrobe can sometimes invigorate us and give us a much needed jolt of inspiration! Color blocking is so much fun because you can take the concept of “working with a blank canvas” to a whole new level. Your canvas becomes one bright or rich solid color that can be paired with another bright or rich solid color. A solid color can also act as the accessory alone to an entire ensemble or be accompanied by another color blocked accessory for a surrealistic effect. Mamma Biscuit showcased just how spirited she can be (and totally on trend) this past weekend while running errands throughout NYC in her color-blocked Autumn outfit. Doesn’t her personality practically pop out at you in
this gorgeous teal color?

ColorBlock3
ColorBlock4

Our fashionable little gremlin sported a rich teal cable knit sweater paired with a fun and surrealistic pillow brooch in the shape of red lips. The brooch added just the right amount of art-pop to the overall look although using the phrase art-pop leaves a really bad taste in my mouth. The last thing I want to do is have you all think that I’m referencing Lady Gaga’s upcoming album entitled ARTPOP in any way—or as my friends like to call it, ARTFLOP, ARTSTOP (I came up with that one) and my favorite being ARTMOP: because someone is gonna have to clean up her pretentious visual and audio mess! In other words, there’s no Applause for Lady Gaga coming from Mamma Biscuit and family! The lyrics: “One second I’m a Koons, then suddenly the Koons is me” should be applied to Mamma Biscuit, not Lady Xerox—after all, Mamma Biscuit is practically a Salvador Dalí in these photographs and nothing says surrealism quite like the length of her epic tongue. On a side note (and since I’m hashing out my hatred of current pop stars) Mamma Biscuit has hired a lawyer to sue Miley Cyrus for stealing her look (see Miley’s extended tongue) during her performance on the MTV Video Music Awards. Simply put, Miley is a talentless and directionless thief whose performance was neither provocative nor shocking. It was actually quite the opposite, predictable and stupid . . . an everything-AND-the-kitchen-sink assault on our eyes and ears. She’s just what the music industry needs, another young, stupid girl they can interior decorate to shove down our throats! How dare she steal Mamma’s extended tongue look!

ColorBlock5

But back to our weekend, we got off the subway at Columbus Circle on Saturday and stopped to snap a few Fall portraits along Central Park South before running our errands. Mamma Biscuit can always draw a crowd of locals and tourists with her impeccable sense of style and unbearable cuteness! There was a woman sitting at the end of this bench trying to have a serious conversation on her cell phone but she kept looking over at Mamma Biscuit and smiling, especially when Mamma started to bark, demanding us from behind the lens to give her another damn peanut butter treat! I know, I’m raising a super model here so I just put up with it really!

ColorBlock6
ColorBlock7

So remember folks, during these Autumn months you should banish the brown, burn the beige and drop the burnt sienna (yes, that is an actual color that Bob Ross loved to use with his fan brush to make fluffy Autumn leaves in many of his iconic landscape paintings) and pick yourself out something colorful from your closet before heading out—you’ll be happy all day long!

Enjoy

Throwback Thursday # 6

Throwback6A

It’s been a hectic couple of weeks since we returned from Provincetown and I’m slowly getting back into work mode and Mamma’s blog here. I’ve been obsessively thinking about Provincetown since we returned and I’m having major withdrawals y’all! I find myself daydreaming at my desk about owning a home there and filling it with tons of pug paraphernalia. Seriously, I have the whole house planned out in my head. It would be a quaint three-bedroom home overlooking the bay and Mamma Biscuit would even have her own bedroom with a prance-in closet to hold her entire fabulous wardrobe! Hey a girl can dream, can’t she? Anyway, in keeping with my promise to provide y’all with a throwback moment every month, this week, I decided to walk down memory lane in, you guessed it, Provincetown!

In 2009, Tommy and I and our newly adopted pug piled into our car and headed up to Provincetown for a fun-filled birthday weekend in the month of March. It was my birthday and totally off-season but that didn’t matter to any of us because we were just looking to get out of NYC—and an excuse to hit some great antique markets along the way. It was cold up there too but that just made our stay that much cozier—a Bed & Breakfast is always more romantic with a crackling fireplace and a pug milling about! What I love about Provincetown in the off-season months is experiencing the locals living their lives without all of the tourists that flood the town during the Summer months. But even when you think you’re in the clear, there’s always an unexpected event going on almost every week of the year in P-town and the weekend we were up there was no exception. For starters, I noticed that there were many bears walking around town. Now before you go and call animal control center from fright let me explain further. In gay culture, a bear is a large, hairy man who projects an image of rugged masculinity. As a rising subculture in the gay and bisexual male communities, bears are one of many LGBT communities with events, codes, and a culture-specific identity. After asking a few locals what the 411 was, I discovered that my birthday weekend happened to fall on a Bear Weekend, hence all the bears walking around. Oh, and don’t let all of that rugged masculinity fool you, almost every single bear we encountered with Mamma Biscuit practically screamed like a girl when they laid their eyes on our four-legged gremlin.

Anyway, we stopped into Ruthies Boutique, a small little thrift store in town and found this rubber Halloween mask of Frankenstein for 50 cents. After dropping two quarters on the counter top at checkout (and flirting with the young man running the cash register) we headed to the Town Green, a small park on Bradford Street across from Town Hall. I placed the mask on my face and had Tommy take some Halloween inspired portraits of me holding the Biscuit Lady in her travel bag in front of the bas-relief depicting the signing of the Mayflower Compact!

Throwback6C
Throwback6B

I love these photos and since Halloween is literally just around the corner, I thought they would get y’all excited and inspired for the upcoming spooky holiday! It just so happened that I was wearing skeleton gloves that matched the green of this mask—and Mamma Biscuit looks positively stoic in this dog-napping scenario going on within these photos!

Throwback6D

So that’s it folks, our latest edition of Throwback Thursday to inspire you all to get your shit in order for Halloween—it will be here before you know it!

Flotsam and Jetsam!

VintageBrooch1

It’s Fashion Week here in New York City but walking around within these empty streets, one would never know it. Why you ask? Well, for starters, Fashion’s Night Out has been cancelled this year. Yes, you read that right! What began in 2009 as a means to encourage consumers to shop and support the fashion industry during the tough economic climate (all while being offered the rare opportunity to meet your favorite designers) is now a mere memory for the 99% who pretended, for just one night, that they (we) could afford any label on 5th Avenue. From what I’ve read online, designers were spending so much money hosting the events and not really generating enough money back in sales, so Vogue and the CFDA called it quits on the industry’s expensive version of a street festival! I guess Anna Wintour does not want to discount luxury goods in 2013 and since sales for such products are not suffering in the slightest, why blame her? After all, high-fashion and great style (in my opinion) should be exclusionary! Ok, maybe I don’t mean to be that cunty it’s just that whenever I type Anna Wintour’s name in a sentence (and oddly, it’s quite often) I feel the need to be scathing, classist and judgmental—goodness, I really feel bad for poor Grace Coddington if Anna Wintour makes lil’ old ineffectual me feel that way! OK, so the cancellation of Fashion’s Night Out has seriously put a damper on Fashion Week but what about the September issue of Vogue magazine, have you all seen the cover? Jennifer Lawrence from The Hunger Games? Really? BORING! At least last year, Mamma and I had so much fun ushering in the Fall season by ripping Lady Gaga to shreds with her Rupaul look-alike cover. Mostly it was just me but Mamma would smile and bark whenever I looked in her direction.

Anyway, here on Mamma’s little corner on the web, we’d like to kick off Fashion Week and the Fall fashion season the right way! We’re talkin’ about some serious, canine-throwback-fabulousness here!

VintageBrooch2
VintageBrooch3

Here we have Mamma Biscuit perched upon a park bench during a fashionable stroll through Fort Tryon Park. Our little gremlin is wearing a chic, pale pink coat paired with an amazing vintage brooch that we acquired two weeks ago from Vintage in Vogue, a vintage clothing shop in Provincetown, Massachusetts.

VintageBrooch6
VintageBrooch8

Detailed in cream colored netting, bird feathers and a rosette fashioned from thick fabric, this brooch is the perfect accent to any lightweight coat in Mamma’s Fall wardrobe. You all know by now that Mamma Biscuit is all about the accessories and the only thing missing from this overall ensemble is a cream-colored pill box hat—and don’t put it passed me, I can find one and make it work for her!

VintageBrooch4

Of course our bundle of joy gets tired very easily. Actually, I’m lying, I instructed Mamma to roar like a lionesse here. I wanted her to channel Grace Jones in an attempt to capture something edgy and editorial—and this is what she came up with, a long, drawn out yawn! Hey, it’s not easy being a top model and fashion icon but Mamma Biscuit is so professional and so chic that within five minutes in front of the camera, we’ve got the photoshoot in the can—well, as long as we have a bag of peanut butter treats waiting for her after I yell out, “It’s a wrap.”

VintageBrooch5
VintageBrooch7

So say goodbye to unbearably humid weather, extremely high temperatures and unsightly mosquito bites—Summer has finally come to an end. The Autumn months are upon us and Mamma’s got a Fall wardrobe to enjoy!

Happy Fashion Week!
